MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF OGSOSA NATIONAL CONFERENCE HELD AT
OFFA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ON SATURDAY, 13TH APRIL, 2002
COMMENCEMENT
The meeting started at 11:30 a.m. under the chairmanship of the National President, Chief
Femi Olukanrni with the opening prayers from Dr. Yemi Jatto and Mrs. Ogundele.
SCHOOL ANTHEM
The school Anthem was beautifully rendered by selected students of the school. The
National President said that copies of the Anthem would be sent to all branches so that
members would be able to render the anthem on occasion like this.
THE PRESIDENT’S WELCOME ADDRESS
The National President read his welcome address in which he itemized the achievements of
OGSOSA under his administration in the areas of provision of infrastructures. He singled
out the OGSOSA (Abuja) for special recognition for renovating the three science
laboratories. He also commended the efforts of Engr. J. A. Akinola, Alh. W. Abiodun
Alayande, Mr. Larry Osai and Mr. Oyebamiji for their great contributions to the OGSOSA
activities at Abuja and National level repectively. Members who had contributed to the Star
Donor List were also commended. He however said that the list would be closed on 31st
December, 2002 and urged members to improve on their contributions.
AUDITOR’S REPORT
The Auditor's report for 2001/2002 was presented. The report gave a bank balance of
N689,987.70 for the year ending 31st December, 2001. Mr. R.O. Aromoye moved for its
adoption and was seconded by Mrs. Alice Ogundele.
REPORTS FROM BRANCHES
Abuja Branch
The report was presented by Engr. J. A. Akinola. He narrated the branch's achievements
over the past year with particular reference to the renovation and equipping of the school's
science laboratories (Physics, Chemistry and Biology). The National body was requested to
send a special letter of appreciation to Dr. J. B. 0. Adewumi who was the largest donor at
the fund-raising occasion for the rehabilitation and equipping of the laboratories. The report
enjoined all members either individually or collectively to contribute to the development of
the school. The branch later presented a cheque of N20,000.00 as its subscription.
Ilorin Branch
The chairman of llorin Branch, Chief G. G. Jaiyeola read the Branch's reports in which he
suggested that the OGSOSA (National) must look for ways of recruiting science teachers
for the School noting that provision of infrastructures without teachers would not provide
the required knowledge. He then announced a subscription fee of N15,000.00 to the
National body.
Offa Branch
In its reports read by the branch chairman. Prince M. 0. Adegboye, the branch expressed
some concern about the membership attendance at genera! meetings. He however stated that
efforts were not relented in mobilising members for greater attendance. He enumerated the
achievements of some members, namely, Chief E. 0. Adesoye, who bagged the National
Honours Award of the Order of Niger (OON), and Alh. Ayotunde Raji, who was appointed
commissioner in the Kwara State Government. He announced the sum of N2,000.00 as
contribution from the Branch.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The Principal, in his report, commended the OGSOSA for its wonderful support to the
school in the area of infrastructure. He noted that the school's achievements in WAEC and
NECO examinations were impressive despite the shortage of teachers. He stated the needs
of the school in the areas of staffing and physical developments.
REACTIONS TO THE REPORTS
Alh. T. A. Sanni commended the efforts of Abuja branch for their wonderful achievement.
He also commended Engr. J. A. Akinola for his contribution towards the construction of a
bore-hole in the school and suggested that the National body should also write a letter of
appreciation to Engr. Akinola in additon to that of Dr. Adewumi.
Chief Y. F. Oyeyemi expressed concern about the shortage of teachers and commended the
school's teachers for their dedication and perseverance.
Dr. G. Oyewo, on behalf of the 1967 set, pledged to reconstruct the school gate.
Mr. Otun Adeyemi, on behalf of the 1968 set, pledged to carry out renovation works worth
between N500,000.00 to N1,000,000.00.
The Abuja and llorin branches said they would study the Principal's requests and 'would get
in touch with the school.
REVIEW OF OGSOSA CONSTITUTION
Only Ilorin and Abuja branches sent their drafts for the review of the constitution.
DONATIONS
The following donations were received
- Dr. Oyewo Gafar N50,000.00
- Chief Y. F. Oyeyemi N25,000.00
- Engr. J. A. Akinola N50,000.00
- Prof. Jide Matanmi N5,000.00
60th ANNIVERSARY OF OGS (1943 - 2003)
- It was suggested that Ilorin, Abuja and Offa branches should send a member each to
participate in the committee that would prepare for the anniversary
- OGS and Manpower Development Book would be published by the OGSOSA and
launched during the Anniversary. An Almanac would also be produced for the same
purpose.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The following were announced:
- Osanyin J. A. memorial lecture would come up on May 25th, 2002 at Ludlow Hall, OGS.
- A reception would be organized by OGSOSA for Rtd. Hon. Justice M. B. Belgore at a
date to be announced later.
- Each Branch should send a group photograph while its chairman should send Personal
copy for the Anniversary Almanac.
- Installation of Dr. Gafar Oyewo (1967 set) as The District Governor, 911 District of the
Rotary International on Saturday 13th July, 2002 at MUSON CENTRE, Onikan, Lagos.
- Publications:
- Pupils Workshop on Integrated Science Improvised Apparatus for JSS classes in
Nigeria by Ogundele A. A. (Mrs.)
- Chief Joseph Akinwumi Osanyin (The Teacher of Teachers): The Man, His Work
and Remarkable Life (1908 - 1998) by Oyebamiji Caleb Dele (OGS 1974 set)
DONATION OF BOOKS TO THE LIBRARY
The OGSOSA (National) donated 10 copies of Osanyin J. A. book written by Oyebamiji to
the library, while Abuja Branch donated 5 copies, and 5 copies of integrated science book.
GENERAL REMARK
The Eesa of Offa, Chief Y. Bukoye, said he was present as a representative of Kabiyesi, His
Royal Highness, The Olofa of Offa, as well as in his own personal capacity as an old
student. He apologized for the Kabiyesi's inability to attend, and said the Kabiyesi promised
to host the conference next year.
15. VOTE OF THANKS
The President gave the vote of thanks. He thanked the Olofa and the Eesa of Offa for their
support. He also thanked the home branch for the reception, and wished everybody that
came save journey back to their various destinations.
16. CLOSING
The conference was brought to an end by 3: 00 p.m with the closing prayer from Alh. A. Y.
